  2. This article brought back memories kept hidden in me for almost 5 decades. This one talks about political education center outside the country. But there were other numerous locations inside the country that were set up to raise the political awareness of citizens with mostly from the younger generation like me. The brotherhood/camaraderie it instilled in all of us was incredible. At one point, 13 of us were selected to be trained in weapon handling and warfare. Then we were assigned to set up a temporary base in the highlands in the eastern location of the country. We were well armed as a guerilla unit.

We traveled thru the northeast of Shewa and sneaked into the Habro region. Three of us were from that area and well familiar with the culture and language of the peasants there. I was born in Wachu and spent my preschool years in Arba Reketi area. 2 others were born in rural areas close Hirna. So we knew every nook and cranny of the area. One occasion that is still fresh and reverberating in my memory was the speech we made at the peasants association rally at Mechara area in 1976. At that point we had lost our contact because the person was exposed to the regime and no one knows what became of him to this day. At that time the party structure was divided into two very hostile factions and it was a bloodbath. Then right after the rally was over we were told by members of the OLF that just arrived there and was being led by one Baro Tumsa to leave the area. Baro Tumsa was hiding there until he was gunned down by one of his own soldiers.

Then we moved to Gara Negus which was relatively safe and still not reached by members of the Haile Fida group. Both in Habro and Gara Negus areas the peasants took us just one of their own and it was easier for us to blend. But that did not last too long. The invading Somali army began sending rogue elements of the ONLF creating chaos and carrying out widespread looting the nearby areas. At that time ONLF had the reputation of killing anyone who was not a Muslim even if you were an Oromo. We decided to move out once again and headed to the lowlands of the area between the railway stations of Mulu and Mieso. We followed the same route by the army under Fitawrari Tekle Hawariat in 1935-36 to confront the Italian fascist army coming from the Assab direction which did not materialized. We passed through small settlement of Butuji north east of Mieso and headed to the area controlled by the Alimirah led Afar Liberation Front. At this point we had lost one of our members to a sudden bout of fever during our stay in Gara Negus area. Alimirah group were so friendly that they welcomed us with both arms. We asked them to provide us safe passage to Tigray so we can join the EPRA there. They told us that was impossible because the area in between was patrolled by hostile Eritrean fighters. We stayed with our Afar brothers for almost a year and they suggested we move to Djibouti and Saudi Arabia. Then their leader made an arrangement for us to move to Djibouti and that was so smooth that we were treated like diplomats all the way.

After we arrived in Djibouti we did not stay there more than 60 days. 2 of us went to Cyprus, 3 of us to Greece, 4 of us to Italy and I and 2 others went to Riyadh. All of us lived the rest of our lives scattered all of the world but still keeping touch until we are not alive anymore. 2 of us are still alive and we get in touch as fathers and great grandfathers. When I start to think what we all had to go thru after we were put in a group of 13, it comes to me as if it had happened just yesterday. When one of us went hungry we were all just as hungry. When one faced the elements of Mother Nature we were in it together. When things seemed so harsh and unbearable we kept our heads and spirits up together as one. There was always someone who made us laugh when things were depressing. I now sometimes think it was almost a miracle that we survived it all.
    All Glory To Him!!!

    • If I may add a few more stories from personal experience as a member of a group from the 1970’s, it will be the following.

First of all, after talking to my only existing pal, he correctly reminded the entire time we stayed with our Afar brothers and in Djibouti was about 7 months. We all left Djibouti at beginning of 1977.

During our stay with Afar Liberation Front almost all of us were able to learn the language and almost fluent in it even before we arrived in Djibouti. In Djibouti they had made arrangement for us to stay in the mainly Afar populated neighborhood called Arhiba. It was memorable. While in Djibouti, news were reaching us where many refugees apprehended at border crossings along the railway line were forcibly deported back to the country they fled atrocities from by French authorities. Many of them were wanted by the regime and were executed in the desert immediately after they were sent back. That was against the international laws to which France was one of the original countries that signed the treaty. When I think more about it now, it makes me suspect that those French border security officers could have been the precursors of the present day Marine Le Pen’s party. I hope our historians will start looking at arrest records of the border areas during the last days of French rule of Djibouti(1976-77).

Once we arrived in Djibouti, our Afar hosts made arrangements for us to sneak into the port facility and board merchant ships destined to Europe making sure the ship’s first port of call was in Europe. They avoided those that will make their next stop in Egypt or Sudan. That was why some of us went to Cyprus, Greece and Italy. I and 2 of us were the last group left and ours was the smoothest. Again our Afar hosts were able to get us laissez-passer travel document and traveled to Saudi Arable. As a 2nd year finance and statistics student it did not take me too long for me to find very good paying job. The two others were also employed as office workers in different businesses. We were able to save substantial amount of money to head to our final destinations. All glory to all of those who took us as one of their own in the countryside and deserts inside Ethiopia and others in Djibouti!

  3. This will be the final account of my previous life as a freedom fighter and life afterwards.

After leaving the country and the continent, I was always longing to one day go back and see how that country was doing and see if I can find those who we left still alive. What I did after leaving the country(this was also true to the rest of the survivors) is close shut the political aspect of my life. That has its roots for a feeling of being abandoned by our leaders. All of us have no animosity but still feel forgotten after we moved out of the place of our formation.

I had the chance to go back to visit the country after Derg was ousted. That was during the late 1990’s. First I stayed with my relatives in the capital who thought I was long gone and dead. It was emotionally overwhelming. We mourned those who were not alive anymore. After two weeks stay in the capital I went to the Habro area to meet our gracious hosts and they could not believe when I told them we all survived except one. One Oromo farmer who was our main host during our brief stay there was still alive. His wife who all used to call her Adade(Auntie) was still alive. But he has lost one his children who was forcibly conscripted into Derg’s army. They told me he started having mental health problem(PTSD) after he came back and committed suicide by throwing himself off a steep rocky ravine in the area. We had a wonderful time without worrying for Baro Tumsa’s soldiers or Derg’s murderer squads. I promised them to keep in touch and provide help in every way I could. My wife and I were able to sponsor one of their grandchildren to come where we live to go school and he did not disappoint.

While my stay in the capital, some one showed a compilation of names who were murdered by the Derg and in-fighting between different political groups. All I could was shed tears. ፈጣሪ ነፍሳቸውን በአጸደ ገነት ያኑርን እንላለን!!!

  4. Oops, I just made a big snafu. I was saving comments by Brother Ittu under a separate folder and accidently pasted Ittu Aba Farda under the Name field in my previous comment and didn’t realize after I pressed Post Comment. I apologize to Obbo Ittu. It was an honest mistake.
