15. It is a bit of overkill criticism. All these because the guy smoked pot while filming. Look around you! There is so much wrong happening around you in Ethiopia. People are starving and dying. So many suffer in jail for no good reason separated from their loved ones. People are displaced from their land to accommodate foreign investors. So many under age prostitutes in the streets of Addis. Kat (chat) houses in every corner. Homosexuality going rampant. Cost of living rising sky high where people can’t afford one meal a day as opposed to three. There is so much wrong in Ethiopia to talk(write) about instead of an actors dedication to his profession and telling him how to do his job. Even Hollywood actors/ actresses go through dramatic changes to play their roles. Just recently Matthew McConaughey had to lose over 30 pounds to play H-I-V infected man in ” Dallas buyers club” and won an Oscar. They go to the extreme to make it believable. The guy (Girum) spoke the truth which should be admirable knowing the criticism that could follow from the likes of you. Blame goes squarely to the T.V station for airing the clip of his behavior not the actor. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t condone smoking pot but i feel there are more pressing issues to discuss in Ethiopia than harshly maligning an actor whose views on how to do his job may be different than yours. Speak for justice and equality in the same vigor that you spoke of about Girum Ermias.

19. It seems there is something wrong behind this comment. I don’t see any problem with the show. Girum showed how the weed is dangerous and also in the show he advised the youngsters never to use weed. He tested the feeling practically. In my view Girum did great job and he remains a role model for the coming new actors and actresses.

21. The writer has no clue about drugs. I assume that most ethiopians are in the same mindset as this drug-ignorant writer. Drug is a politics. Imgaine it yourself. While alchol and cigarets are legal but a natural plat like marjuana is illegal!!! Dehumanizing drug users is not gonna solve the problem. Even the mighty America could not win the war on drugs yet, coz war on drug is a political agenda where private prisons, police officers and the legal sytem make billions of dollars a year! So let us educate ourselves and be open to such issues as drugs, sex, sexual orientation and so forth. Hiding behind these issues is not gonna save the generation. We need open discussion based on facts and scientific enquirey not on just cultrual side or artistic writing!

    • The writer of this article clearly missed the point. Girum stated that he followed a technique of actually being the character he’s assigned to. The fact that Seifu brought the video tape on his show and inquire a response from Girum should tell us how much respect and talent Girum has for his career. Furthermore, he clearly denounced the use of drug and reminded the public of its dreadful effect. If you can’t wrap your mind through his logical explanation, then you are clearly writing this to provoke public speculation and improper allegation. So, you should have though twice before putting down this embarrassing article.

22. You all are right, I share your concern. By its sense artists are actors, so they are expected to act not to perform what is in the reality. I think Girum Ermias, you have got the wrong teacher and you should have resists such kinds of wrong teachers. Seifu Fantahun is a kind of person that never mature, always childish, I am not surprised by what he did.

25. On top of all Seifu Fantahun is a very irresponsible and poor-minded money hunter. With his little mind, which can’t evaluate what is constructive and distractive, he tries to be in a high class just opening his mouth for nonsense talks. Next, this so called artists do need to learn a bit more of professionalism. What is “hono mete wen?”, is this artist going to shoot on innocent Ethiopians if he is playing a killer character?, is he going to teach our kids what a real crime, sex, drug addiction, …..in reality show? What is the name “Actor” mean? It is all about acting as if it is really being! Unfortunately, our so called artists are not able to Act……when they can’t act as a drug user, they want to use drug and filmed from there. This is the most stupid lack of professionalism. Where is the law of rule of the country? Drug use and promotion are illegal in Ethiopia….why not the government take action on this so called Seifu Fantahu (promoter) and the drug user Girum?

      Let us say in another movie he is given a character who kills people. Is he going to kill people. Then if he gets a chance to appear on a show like Seifu’s Show, he will tell us that killing people is not good but he did it to act the character exactly? Every time he plays is he going to do in reality every thing the character does? Think that he may play various characters such as thieve, robber, murderer, medical professional (like a surgeon, etc), rapist, drunk etc. Is he going to live all these lives? The truth is the concept of “being the real character instead of acting it” is flawed. The concept was to mean “act as closely similar as possible to the intended character”. I did not see Alemayehu Tadesse supporting the idea on the show. He was apparently shocked.

      Second, I think the use and possession of drug (of any kind and for any purpose) is a crime in Ethiopia. What Girum did was a crime on its own. Further, he himself has admitted committing it at his will in public. He may be subject to prosecution Police can also start investigating the sources and the routes of the drug and take all accomplices to court.

      Third, the fact that that drug use was presented on a public medium was against the social norm of Ethiopia. It encourages and gives grounds for others to try the same thing. It is also an express violence on the laws which forbid it. Finally, It also violates the good moral character of the people.

29. First of all I would like to comment on the peoples who gave commented on the issue. We do have the right to comment our feeling but it should not be abusing. Some of you insulted the artists which is immoral. If egg broken from inside it creates life but if it is from out side it will end life. Change starts from self. We have to be smart enough to give proper comment. We need to give a credit for our artists.
    The second point that I would like to focus is about the main issue. Of course if you see it from one perspective only it seems they are not playing their role well for the wider community and to their profession as well. Moreover, it is against the rules related to drug in the country. But, lets see from positive side. One of the point the writer of this issue raised was the fear he has on characters representing sex. This is something different. I don’t think this will be a problem any more. 32. This goes to show you how low the Ethiopian “film industry” has been all along? Am afraid to call them artists to begin with. Same goes to Seifu Fantahun, what is in him that got him that stage?
